PINK EDIT

Ahh pink, once considered appropriate for little girls dressed in tutu's and the icing colour of your barbie doll cake at your 5th birthday, is now the colour for badass babes in high cut lingerie and silky camisoles, fluffy sex-kitten sliders and Victoria Secret's robes. Pink is the ultimate hangover hue from the 90's and it is, for some reason, incredibly liberating to decorate ourselves with.

This project was really fun! I love creating beyond my usual, and watercolour can be a great deal of fun (seriously, it's hard to stop). Here are some snaps of the process and the final pieces - I really enjoy how they turned out and I hope you do too!

THE IDEA PROCESS

This started when I found a picture of the Dope hat on Pinterest. I loved the simplicity of the hat style, the softness of the colour and the attitude of the word & lettering - the combo got me. Then the idea struck to do a story of 3 pieces. I felt like I could see the girl who'd wear all 3 items, I could relate to her fascination with pink and 90's fashion, and I could possibly be her best friend.

THE TECHNICAL PROCESS

> Firstly, I began with sketching the outline and basic structure of the item with a very fine and hard graphite pencil - I alternated between using 0.03mm mechanical pencil and HB pencil.

> Secondly, the challenging part. I mixed white and red water colour paints (Windsor and Newton) and used a round tip brush to move the paint around. I was not very careful with staying in the lines and I did this on purpose... I like the 'washed over the top' kinda of look with some areas of white or darker areas where the paint decided to pool. After the paint dried a little I went over it again and smoothed out the 'rimmed edges' that formed from the water in the paint.

> Lastly was the fun part of outlining the items in pen and adding details. This all sort of ties it in for me, I love the contrast of the black ink with the watercolour and soft pencil lines. I didn't want to rub the pencil out, it added to the whole effect so I left them there as is (most of it got washed away with the paint anyway).
